Your English 37 Simple Past Tense Poem

Level: A2-B2

Goal: Learn many irregular verbs in the simple past tense through rhyme.

In this recording, you have a poem in a continuous reading and then in a listen & repeat version. I have written it to enable students to practice the correct use of 30 irregular verbs in the simple past tense.

I have seen students vastly improve their speaking skills by learning poems by heart. The rhymes will make it easier for learners to memorize the lines, and thus remember the simple past tense of these irregular verbs.

There is a written exercise available free with this poem to help students build vocabulary and at the same time improve their pronunciation. Teachers can use this exercise as a listening comprehension followed by pair work in class. With the activity proposed at the end of the worksheet, this poem will turn it into a "speaking exercise."

Kind regards,
